Fatal crash closes carriageway for nine hours

Date: Friday 15th September 2017

THE northbound carriageway of the M6 was closed for nearly nine hours between Catterlen and Carlisle after a fatal crash near Southwaite.

Police were called at 11-50pm on Tuesday after a grey Range Rover left the road, crashed through a fence and ended up in a field.

Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called to the scene. Two fire crews, from Lazonby and Penrith, attended, and used small hand tools to free the man.

However, the man, aged 66, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was from out of the county and his family has been informed.

The carriageway was closed between Junction 41 at Catterlen and Junction 42 at Carlisle until just before 9am due to repair works. Diversions were put in place.

Witnesses or anyone with information can contact Cumbria police on the 101 number.
