FATHER AND SON ON TOP OF THE WORLD …
IT was a family affair for a father and son team as both got on to the winners’ board in the annual Skiddaw Fell Race.
Bill Booth scooped victory as winner of the veterans’ over-60 class, while son Simon was the overall winner of the gruelling race. The two were left feeling on top of the world.
Simon claimed victory in the nine mile race after being only fifth at the 3,054 ft summit. A member of the Borrowdale Fell Runners, he staged a breathtaking descent of the slippery fellside and passed the front man Alan Bowness, of Cumberland Fell Runners.
Bowness had led at the top but as the runners emerged from the drizzle, high winds and mist, it was Booth who was flying.
Meanwhile, father Bill, who competes for Keswick Athletic Club, was leading home the veteran over-60s category to complete the family double.
The ladies’ winner was also a local competitor, Lyn Thompson, who overtook Debbie Nixon, of Border Harriers.
Nixon, who was running her first fell race, stormed up Skiddaw in fine style only to be passed by Lyn later in the race.
It was a case of no gain without pain for Lyn, a member of the Keswick club, because she finished the race limping with what is almost certainly a stress fracture of the foot.
She said: “I have suffered from stress fractures in the past so I know what they feel like. Unfortunately, this could put me out of the running for a vital championship team race which Keswick are contesting in a few weeks’ time.”
There was an encouraging 125 strong field for this year’s event, which is one of the longest established in the fell runner calendar. Times were not good because of the conditions but the race attracted a classy field.
