Airman’s relatives traced
Sir, Many thanks to the Herald for publishing the story about the Penrith airman who is to be remembered on a memorial in French village and to everyone who subseqently helped in the search to find the family of Gunner Sergeant Walter Hugh Wilkinson, from Penrith.
I am delighted to say that close relatives of the airman have been located and that they have been invited to attend the unveiling of a memorial in St. Sever Calvados, Normandy, where the Wellington bomber crashed, killing nine villagers and five of the six crew members.
I believe that contact has now been made with all of the relatives of the airmen, and would like to pass on the thanks of everyone involved in finding these families. Yours etc,
