Council should invest in wider business community

Date: Tuesday 26th September 2017

Sir, I read with interest your article (Herald, 16th September) regarding Eden Council looking to enter the commercial property market.

It was a shame your reporter was excluded from the discussion for reasons of commercial sensitivity. In the past the council has been involved in commercial development, but not successfully.

Council officers are local government officers and not generally experienced entrepreneurs.

If funds are available for development I would suggest they be released as grants to the wider business community who generally have lots of experience.

There is no need to set up a new grant scheme as there are a number or organisations running such support and looking for match funding for projects that have been rigorously assessed.

I think also consideration should be given to investing in the district-wide business community to counter the decline of, for instance, the market towns which are suffering from the large commercial developments in Penrith. Yours etc,
