Respectful and thought provoking
Sir, It was a privilege to join the civil march to attended the Royal British Legion Remembrance service at St. Andrew’s Church, Penrith, alongside fellow Cumbrians.
It was a respectful and thought provoking event. We were not there to glorify war — we were there to remember those who have suffered because of it.
My great uncle Jack died in the battle of the Somme, alongside thousands of others, of course, and there were many more at the service who had their own family remembrances of the bitter consequences of conflicts around the world. The occasion also brought home to me how those in power need to think very carefully about decisions they make which can mean terrible suffering and death to others. Yours etc,
(Chairman, Eden District Council)
