Sporting excellence

Date: Tuesday 5th December 2017

Sir, I was delighted to attend the Cumbria Sports Awards dinner, organised by Active Cumbria, on Friday with my fellow councillors, Lesley Grisedale and John Thompson.

The awards, now in their 33rd year, are an excellent opportunity to showcase all the sporting talent the county has available.

Eden district was well represented and congratulations go to the following people for their awards and continued achievements and dedication: Service to sport — Trevor “Jock” Nugent (Appleby AFC); young sports leader/volunteer of the year — Isaac Butterworth (volunteer, Cumbria RFU); rising star — Poppy Scholefield, Calthwaite (football/cricket).

I was delighted to present the best team achievement award, which Eden District Council sponsored, to Malcolm Wilson’s M-Sport rally team, which has had an excellent season.

Eden District Council continues to encourage people to lead active lifestyles through the provision of activities at Appleby and Penrith leisure centres, by supporting sports clubs through the Eden Community Fund, leisure grant fund and sports coach education bursary.

For more information about this funding visit www.eden.gov.uk or call the council’s leisure services team on 01768 817817. Yours etc,

ELAINE MARTIN

(Communities portfolio holder, Eden Council)
