Visitors’ praise for “wonderful community”
Sir, I have been staying in Brook Cottage, Askham, since Friday, 23rd February, for a break with my husband.
We have had a great welcome from local businesses and locals alike — a typical Cumbrian welcome.
However, due to the atrocious weather conditions, we would be grateful if you praise these lovely people in your paper. We are from East Lothian and travel home was not a sensible option. We were offered accommodation at the local Queens Head Inn if we could not extend our holiday let.
Locals have kept us up to date with information and made us welcome in their pub. We have seen how the village store owners and staff have helped village residents to stay safe and helped when folk are not able to access banks etc for cash, putting shopping on tabs, helping people who have fallen and offering to deliver supplies to vulnerable people.
They let us use their phone at no cost as there was no mobile coverage. We contacted Cumbrian Cottages about our situation and the cottage owners told them to let us stay until it was safe to travel.
Well done all of you. Thanks for being a wonderful community. We got home safely on Sunday afternoon and today we booked the same cottage for a week in June. Yours etc,
CAROL and ALF MCGUINNES
