Date: Tuesday 13th February 2018

THE widower of a former Eden district councillor has taken the seat she held in a by-election following her death.

Robin Leonard Orchard, of Melmerby, stood as the Conservative candidate in the Hartside ward after his wife Sheila died, aged 66, in December.

Mr. Orchard polled 175 votes in Thursday’s poll, equivalent to 52.9 per cent. of the vote.

Runner-up was Susan Jane Castle-Clarke for the Independents, who polled 98 votes, and in third place was the Green Party candidate, Richard Gordon Henry, with 58 votes.

The turnout was 30.74 per cent., said Eden District Council. A total of 331 people voted from an electorate of 1,080.

The Conservative vote was down by 3.9 per cent. and the Independent vote down 13.7 per cent., while the Green vote rose by 17.5 per cent.

Council leader Kevin Beaty (Con, Skelton) said: “Well done, Rob Orchard, a tribute to your late wife Sheila. We look forward to welcoming you to council next week.”
