Dunkirk tops Penrith popular films list

THE most popular film of the past year at Penrith's Lonsdale Alhambra Cinema was Dunkirk, telling the story of the evacuation of Allied soldiers cut off and surrounded by the German army at Dunkirk, France, in 1940.

The 2017 film was written, directed and produced by Christopher Nolan and its cast includes Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D'Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.

Alan Towers, manager of the cinema, said: "I have just been doing our annual figures for the year and a list of the most popular films in Penrith is always interesting.

"In 2017, we welcomed more than 69,000 customers, which is an increase of 4,000 over 2016."

The top films with most admissions were: 1 Dunkirk; 2 Sleeping Beauty; 3 Paddington 2 (which is still showing); 4 Despicable Me 3; 5 Star Wars: The Last Jedi (still showing); 6 Murder on the Orient Express; 7 The Lego Barman Movie; 8 Sing; 9 Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2; 10 The Boss Baby.
