FRIENDS and supporters, old and new, of Appleby and District Friday Club met to celebrate the group’s 40th anniversary.

Some guests had travelled from as far as Ripon to be there as the group celebrated the occasion at the Sands Methodist rooms in the town.

Following a delicious two-course meal, prepared by Sheila Raine and friends, Judith Cove, widow of one of the club founders, the Rev. Ken Cove, presented commemorative mugs to all the members.

Three original members — Jenny Thompson, Christine Forrest and Neil Richardson — cut the birthday cake together to rapturous applause from those gathered.

Chairman Peter Ivinson thanked everyone for coming and said the success of the club over the years had been down to the commitment of many helpers past and present.

The support of the local community had also been key to the club’s success.

The evening continued with lively music and dancing from the Eden Ceilidh Band then, after a thoroughly enjoyable evening, guests went home with birthday cake and an anniversary pen.
