Micro pub plan brewing

Date: Monday 12th March 2018

PLANNING permission is being sought to create a micro pub in Kirkby Stephen’s Croft Street, where the Megabites sandwich shop was a popular takeaway for nearly two decades.

Steven Howarth, of South Road, has applied to Eden Council for approval to change the former sandwich shop into a micro pub serving food, including internal alterations. The plan is to stock beer from small Cumbrian breweries.

A meeting of Kirkby Stephen Town Council was told that the pub — which would be called The Laal Nook — would cater for coast to coast walkers as well as locals and would be designed to be a “social area” where people could talk to each other with no wifi connection on offer.

A statement accompanying the application says the property has now been vacant for more than 12 months.

“The work we hope to do will restore the front of the building to its original state, enhance its appearance and in turn be an asset to the main street in Kirkby Stephen,” the statement adds.
