MoD plans prompt public inquiry

Date: Tuesday 28th August 2018

A PUBLIC inquiry is to be held next month into Ministry of Defence plans to deregister significant areas of common land which form part of the Warcop training area.

Mark Brennand, Cumbria County Council’s lead historic environment and commons officer, said the commons registration service was processing three applications for the MoD to deregister significant areas of common land at Hilton, Murton and Warcop.

Speaking at a meeting of the county council’s development control and regulation committee on Thursday, Mr Brennand said that due to the significant interest in the applications and their legal complexities, an independent inspector had been hired to conduct a public inquiry into the legal aspects.

Following the hearing, which is due to be held in Kendal on 13th and 14th September, it is hoped the inspector’s report and an officer’s report will be put before a meeting of the committee on 6th December for a decision to be made.
