Penrith firm in running for national award
A PENRITH building firm has been shortlisted for a national parliamentary award in a scheme which highlights corporate responsibility in the community and workplace.
Atkinson Building Contractors was nominated by Penrith and the Border MP Rory Stewart for the 2017 National Responsible Business Champion award, the result of which will be announced at a reception in Parliament on Wednesday.
In selecting companies for the national award shortlist, parliamentarians looked for companies that are supporting their local community; investing in healthy workplaces; offering apprenticeships and training to all age groups; promoting equality and diversity in the workplace, including offering disabled people work opportunities; and monitoring suppliers’ actions on these issues.
In nominating Atkinson Building Contractors, a family business with almost 100 employees, Mr. Stewart cited its generous support for many local clubs and charities and said it was “leading the way for apprenticeship schemes in Cumbria”.
The shortlist comprises Anglian Water Services, AO.com, Atkinson Building Contractors, Heineken UK, Hotter, intu properties, Liberty House Group, London City Airport, Marks & Spencer, Maydencroft Limited, Pfizer Ltd., Standard Life Aberdeen, Thanet Earth, Marbrook Centre and Zurich Insurance.
