Appleby treated as a rubbish tip
Monday, 18 June 2007

Sir, I note that on Page 6 of last week’s Herald you devote a large article, plus photographs, on the annual Appleby horse fair. However, I can find no mention of the general squalor which seems to accompany this event.

Last year I wrote to the Herald to express my disgust at the litter left, and questioned whether this archaic event has any place in modern Britain as long as those who come here continue to treat our area as a rubbish tip. Twelve months on my views on this have not changed.

I do not see why council workers and residents should be left to clean up this mess, or why we local tax payers presumably have to foot the bill for doing so.

This state of affairs is particularly saddening when many local people in this beautiful part of England are working hard to reduce their own household waste through efforts on recycling, composting and avoiding packaged food, etc. Yours etc,

NIGEL JENKINS
