Academy take Division III title — and it’s all to play for in II

Date: Thursday 18th April 2019

PENRITH AFC Academy secured the James Cropper Westmorland Football League Division III title with a point from their game at Endmoor KGR Reserves on Saturday.

They needed only one point from two remaining games to take the title and did so despite not taking their scoring opportunities in a 0-0 draw. Man of the match was Luke Hunter.

Their final game is at home to Burneside on 1st May. That result will go towards deciding who joins them in Division II next season — Burneside or Kirkoswald Reserves.

Next up for the Academy is the Peter Daws Memorial Shield semi-final against Staveley United Reserves today. If they win they will play Burneside in the final following their 2-1 semi-final victory over Penrith Royal.

It is tight at the top of the second division, which is led by Keswick Reserves with 44 points from 21 games, with three left to play. Dent are second on 43 from 21 and Kirkby Stephen third with 39 from 19.

An 8-0 thrashing of Appleby Reserves on Saturday, followed by a 1-0 victory over Eden Thistle on Tuesday saw Keswick take over top spot, while Kirkby slipped up at Windermere SC Reserves on Saturday, losing 3-1.

However, Kirkby were in action at Dent on Thursday evening in a vital match in terms of promotion and the league title. However, things may not be decided until the final day of the season, 4th May, when Kirkby Stephen host Keswick Reserves.

Division I champions Keswick moved into the final of the High Sheriff’s Cup with a 2-1 victory over Appleby at Frenchfield with goals from Andy Frampton and Karl Southern. They will play Kirkoswald in the final.
