Destroying a landmark

Date: Friday 30th November 2007

Sir, Eden Council’s decision to make Adam Hoyle pull down Carr House has made me wonder why we ever bother to vote.

Twenty-three local residents sent letters supporting his attempt to keep this carbon neutral house. There was not a single objection. Yet still the councillors we elected to represent us have decided to ignore our opinion and make him raze it to the ground.

In so doing, they are destroying a landmark that has been part of Mallerstang’s heritage for more than 300 years.

Please tell me who is best qualified to judge what is right for this dale. The people who live and work there or a planning committee 30 miles away which is usually only too happy to forget about us until our votes or our taxes are needed. Yours etc,
