Festival win for Bell
RIDERS from Penrith’s Beacon Wheelers cycling club were in action at the weekend.
Matthew Bell and Alex Hodgson travelled to Guisborough to compete in the under-12 youth race that forms part of the East Cleveland Cycling Festival.
A big field negotiated a tight town centre circuit, with Bell taking first place and Hodgson close behind in fourth.
Meanwhile, Russell McLean began his open event season on Saturday in the North Tyneside Riders 10-mile race at Cramlington on a cold, blustery morning in the North East, in contrast to the blue skies and calm day when he left Cumbria.
He stopped the clock in 22.02 for ninth place, 30 seconds slower and a few places off where he would have liked. He now moves on to the club’s own event at Tebay this weekend hoping for another top 10 ride.
On Sunday, Neil Withington was in action for Beacon Wheelers in the Kent Valley circuit of Wild Boar Fell. This hilly time trial is part of the Lakes and Lancs Spocco Series.
Using a slightly shortened course, this event is run using a tough circuit around Kirkby Stephen and Sedbergh. Withington completed the course in 1.10.04 and took 10th place.
Beacon Wheelers held their first A6 10 race on Tuesday evening. Results were: C. Horseman, 21.59; Peter Hopley, 32.03; C. Scott, 27.07; Neil Withington, 24.10; M. Atkinson, 24.24; S. Blackmore, 29.44; S. Toppin, 31.57; M. Keir, 29.43
