Food writer goes back to her roots

Date: Friday 4th January 2019

THIS time of year for Bryony Bowie, a native of Penrith who now lives in London, is all about going back to her roots and Cumbrian family home.

The 25-year-old grew up in Penrith but moved to London a few years ago to pursue a career in food writing which she describes as “a niche but incredibly rewarding job”.

As well as running her recipe blog,, Bryony works as a writer for Tesco food magazine. She said: “We spend six months at work planning and creating the Christmas issue — reading turkey recipes during a summer heatwave is a very surreal experience.

“My roots always tug me back up north though, especially at this time of year — being home is such a part of what Christmas is for me.

“Carol singing at St Andrew’s Church on Christmas Eve, wrapping up with woollens and a hot flask to venture to a lake on Boxing Day.

“We have our family traditions like everyone else, but we do like trying new things too, as often it’s the small changes that we find ourselves looking forward to, and which help make every year its own.

“That’s what I’ve tried to do with these recipes — simple variations on classic fare to give a new twist to the dinner table.”
