Prep school reunion

Date: Saturday 29th January 2005

Sir, Many of your readers will remember a boys’ prep school in Windermere, called The Craig, which started in 1899 and closed in 1966. The two headmasters were William Snow (1899-1936) and his son-in-law, Edward Hewetson (1036-1966).

It was located in Lake Road between the police station and Beresford Road. The boys went on to public schools (St. Bees, Sedbergh, Rossall, Shrewsbury and St. Edward’s, Oxford, amongst others), some of them winning scholarships.

Cricket and football were keenly taught and played, and the boys had regular expeditions to the hills, especially climbing Helvellyn each summer to see the sunrise.

Geoffrey Fallows (1950-1955) is writing a book giving the story of The Craig and invites all old boys with memories of their time at the school to get in touch with him (tel. 0208 4492980 or e-mail geoffreyfallowscompuserve.com).

It is also proposed to hold a reunion lunch at the Hydro Hotel, Windermere, on 10th May (cost £22). Early soundings have aroused much enthusiasm for this and tickets may be obtained from Mrs. Penelope Grierson (nee Hewetson), The Cottage, Watermillock, Penrith CA11 OJH (tel. 017684 86698), or Tim Lewis, The Lodge, Crocker End, Henley-on-Thames, Oxon RG9 5BJ (tel. 01491 641651 or e-mail timothytlewis43.fsnet.co.uk).

Wives are cordially invited. All the Hewetson children are coming (Patricia, Diana, Penelope and Christopher), now in their 60s and 70s. Yours etc,

PENELOPE GRIERSON

The Cottage,

Watermillock.
