Success in France for Eden wrestlers
CUMBERLAND and Westmorland wrestlers from Eden were among a coach load of competitors who arrived in Guingamp, Brittany, to take part in the international backhold wrestling championships.
They were joined at the annual event by wrestlers from Scotland, Brittany, Iceland, Austria and Spain.
Representing England were six Cumbrian and seven Northumbrian wrestlers, including three from the Eden district.
Ryan Armstrong, aged 15, and Matty Hodgson, aged 14, both of Low Hesket and 14-year-old John Gibson, from Southwaite, are successful regular competitors in traditional Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, which is a backhold style.
Ryan attends Caldew School, Dalston, while Matty and John are both students at Ullswater Community College, Penrith.
Matty was placed first in the minime under-56kg category, Ryan was second in the cadets over-74kg, and John was third in the minime under-62kg, category.
Training takes place every Wednesday evening at Low Hesket village hall from October to March, and in the summer season the wrestlers compete at local shows and events. Winter training is open to everyone from seven years up. Juniors start at 7-30pm and seniors at 9pm.
Carlisle Wrestling Club celebrates its 50th anniversary next year and has trained countless local and world champions.
A spokesman said: “If anyone would like to know more or wants to come and have a go we have male and female classes for all ages and everyone is welcome.
“Just turn up at the hall or check out our Facebook page or our website www.cumberland-westmorland-wrestling-association.com. Alternatively, call Andrew Carlile on 07771 635761.”
