Beauty spot access threat?
SINCE 1976, Kirkby Stephen and District Angling Association has been the owner of a piece of common land known as Watter Yat. It is situated by the River Eden at the northern end of the Mallerstang valley. The association has been the guardian of this area without many serious problems.
Recent outside pressures , which are not financial, have prompted some members of the committee to seriously consider the sale of the area. Although it is common land, there is a danger that interested buyers would restrict full access.
This may be of interest to the many local people who have enjoyed open access for children’s play, walks, paddling or camping for weekends or short periods, and who appreciate the beauty of the views from the site.
There is a limited permissive stay for gypsies at fair time by arrangement with Eden District Council.
I would be very interested to receive letters of support for the status quo, comments or queries by email to irenekirkbystephen.net as soon as possible before 24th April.
