Donovan to feature in Tour of Britain
SOME of the world’s best cyclists will pass through Upper Eden on Tuesday during stage four of the OVO Energy Tour of Britain — and among them will be Eden’s Mark Donovan who has been selected to ride for Team Wiggins.
It was announced last month that the 20-year-old from Penruddock has joined German outfit Team Sunweb on a three-year contract, but will still ride for the development team established by Sir Bradley Wiggins in the Tour, which begins tomorrow in Glasgow and ends next Saturday in Manchester.
He joined Team Wiggins in 2017, and just two weeks ago, the team announced that 2019 would be their last season.
Donovan, who is based in Girona, has had several outstanding results over the past couple of years, although he has been blighted this year by injury and illness.
The Tour of Britain — the nation’s biggest and most prestigious professional bike race — will showcase 120 of the world’s best cyclists across eight challenging stages.
Stage four on Tuesday begins in Gateshead and will pass through Brough, Great Musgrave, Kirkby Stephen, Sedbergh and Kirkby Lonsdale before the finish on the testing climb of Beast Banks in Kendal.
A sprint stage will be held in Kirkby Stephen, with riders expected through the town from around 1-30pm.
