Trio’s puppy-powered fundraiser
THREE Appleby Grammar School students are organising a dog show in their home village of Great Asby to raise money for a cultural trip to South Africa.
Each student has to raise £600 towards the trip, so Thomas Harrison and Charlotte Marston, both aged 14, and Ted Birkbeck, aged 13, are planning to host a fun dog show on Sunday on Chapel Green.
The fun dog show is open to all and there will be refreshments available on the day.
Inspiring the fundraiser were their own dogs — Ella, Thomas’s six-year-old Labrador; Bracken, Charlotte’s two-year-old spaniel; and Zeus, Ted’s two-year-old whippet.
Fundraising so far has included a quiz in the Three Greyhounds pub, an anagrams quiz sheet based on English football teams and Charlotte has made a selection of greetings cards which will be available to purchase at the dog show.
They are also hosting a bingo night at Orton village hall on Friday, 4th October.
All three students live in Great Asby and attended the village school, before moving on to Appleby grammar.
The South Africa trip takes place in July, 2020. A total of 21 students, who will be accompanied by five members of staff, have signed up for the visit, now in its 12th year.
It will involve working with groups from St Monica’s Children’s Home, Durban; students from three secondary schools, including Menzi High which is a township school and received the Top Performing School in South Africa award last year; and the Women of Wentworth. The students will also get to visit Cape Town, to visit the Langa Township and work with children from the Happy Feet Project for the less fortunate living within the township.
