About Us

Established in 1860, the Herald is an independent weekly broadsheet newspaper covering a large area of East Cumbria, including the towns of Penrith, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen, Keswick and Alston.

The newspaper has been published under a number of different titles including: The Penrith Herald, The Appleby and Kirkby Stephen Herald, and The Mid Cumberland and North Westmorland Herald. Since 1925 it has been published under its present title, The Cumberland and Westmorland Herald.

The founder and first owner was Thomas Hodgson, but since 1890 the newspaper has been published by a company, many of whose shareholders reside in Cumbria. The Herald has had only seven editors since the Company was formed and only six persons have occupied the position of Managing Director.

Geographical considerations continue to determine the paper’s principal area of circulation within which it can be claimed that the “Herald” enters practically every household. The Herald is very much part of the life of East Cumbria. It seeks to present week by week a faithful reflection of the life of the community it serves. Comprehensive local news coverage, coupled with a high content of local events and extensive classified advertising account for the strength of the newspaper and its popularity -- it “lives” in the homes of its readers all week until the next issue, therefore delivering a high rate of potential hits for advertisers.

Since 1999 the Herald has been a full colour newspaper. Colour is available to advertisers virtually throughout the newspaper which is printed, on contract, by the Herald and Times Group, Glasgow.

The circulation, certified by the Audit Bureau of Circulation, is currently 10,599 copies sold on average every Saturday (ABC 1st January, 2019 to 31st December, 2019). This includes almost 500 copies mailed out to subscribers each week. Research shows that more people read the Herald in its main circulation area than all the national dailies put together (CN RESEARCH).

The high circulation and household penetration also makes the Herald an effective means of leaflet distribution. We provide a short run colour printing service, colour and mono photocopying and laminating - contact us for more details.
