Honister Slate Mine to feature in Ben Fogle ITV series this week

Honister Slate Mine will make its latest appearance on TV this week, following a special visit paid by presenter and international adventurer Ben Fogle earlier this year.

Ben’s exploits at the attraction will be included in a Lake District special episode of ITV’s For the Love of Britain series, which will be broadcast tomorrow.

Ben, who first found fame on the survival TV programme Castaway 2000, is no stranger to adventure, counting reaching the summit of Everest and rowing across the Atlantic among his achievements.

During filming, Ben took on Honister’s famous Via Ferrata and thrilling Infinity Bridge, which saw him pick his way between two peaks, 2,000 feet above the valley floor below.

The attraction’s activities and events coordinator Prentice Wilkinson-Weir said: “It was great to have Ben and his crew pay us a visit.

“Like Ben himself, adventure runs through our veins up here, so to have someone of his stature spend the day here to experience everything we have to offer, was a real privilege for us.”

Narrated by Julie Walters, tomorrow night’s episode of For the Love of Britain will also feature TV presenter Julia Bradbury on a hike up Helvellyn, actor Ade Edmondson taking the helm of an Ullswater Steamer, while bushcraft expert Ray Mears gets to meet Britain’s biggest ants.

Prentice added: “This TV coverage comes at just the right time for the Lake District.

“As we all wait to see how life will be in 2021 after 2020 proved to be such a difficult and challenging year, we welcome this exposure of the Lake District National Park and hope it brings wider benefits to other businesses right across Cumbria over the coming months.”

Honister has now reopened and will be open operating every day except December 24 and 25, and New Year’s Day over the festive season.
