Penrith’s train station has scooped a major accolade at a prestigious industry awards ceremony.

The station, which is used by thousands of people a year, was named Medium Station of the Year at the National Rail Awards 2020.

It was recognised for its contribution to the local community and its ‘customer-friendly’ presentation.

Judges said Penrith ‘had it all’ and praised the work of the Penrith team as community ambassadors.

Operated by Avanti West Coast, the station was presented the award in a virtual ceremony hosted by TV news reader Huw Edwards.

Avanti West Coast. Penrith Railway Station has recently been named Medium Station of the Year at the National Rail Awards. The award judges commented that Penrith ‘has it all’ and its staff are community ambassadors

The station has its own garden, which is maintained by Penrith Community Gardeners and there is a charity bookshelf in the main waiting room encourages people using the station to take a book in return for a donation that supports local causes.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic – when a limited number of trains were running – the Penrith team continued to work hard to keep key workers moving.

They also donated items of food and toiletries to those most in need within the local community.

Zina Nomicas, general manager at Avanti West Coast, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of the team at Penrith. They embody the true spirit of Avanti West Coast, and it’s fantastic their efforts have been recognised.”
